CC What We Did Back There?

2951

2930 In a previous post we mentioned demoing the Runz FS1 head-unit in our Volkswagen CC. A few more goodies have been brought over from Korea for us to demo including this (non-OEM) back-up camera. No images or video from us yet of the back-up display on the HU but it’s very satisfactory, both night and day. CC owners would appreciate the benefit of having a back-up camera. There’s a small price to pay for the CC’s beautiful and sleek design – blind spots.

That’s not all that was done back there though…

A “remote trunk” feature has been installed that allows us to open and close the trunk with a simple press of a button. Three, to be exact: The trunk release buttons on the key FOB and driver’s door along with a 3rd new one added to the trunk liner (for closing – you still open the trunk with a flip of the trunk badge). Below is a video hosted on YouTube showing off how it all works:

We were honestly apprehensive about having the feature added to begin with. After all, opening and closing a trunk isn’t a difficult task. But there’s no denying the added cool factor in having the remote trunk feature! Keeping hand prints off the paint is an added bonus. It’s been a big hit in the Korean market and we are grateful to have the opportunity to test it here for the US market. No word on pricing or distribution but that’s something we’re working out. Stay tuned!

It’s A Whole New World

iBabyPreviewIt’s a whole new world out there, both for Andrew Donald Hugel (above) who just joined us this last April (Congrats again, Karli and Hans!!), and the two of us as we explore a new area of photography – people!  After years of putting mostly inanimate objects in front of our lenses (with the exception of a few candids here and there), we never really attempted people or portrait photography.  But in October of last year when our friends Lindsay and Rhett asked us to take pictures of them for their engagement we’ve since been contacted by a few others with similar requests.  The sudden “demand” comes as a surprise but we’re up for the challenge.  With their permission, we’ll show off examples of some of the people and portrait photography we’ve attempted in the last 6 months.  Thanks for continuing to follow along with us and stay tuned!

Demoing The Runz FS1 Head Unit

2257 We’ve been given an opportunity to demo a new (to the US market) “infotainment” head unit in our Volkswagen CC.  The Runz FS1 is a Korean sourced head unit and is a direct competitor to Volkswagen’s own flagship navigation head unit, the RNS-510.  It’s had a quality run since it’s debut in the Korean Volkswagen market in 2007 and we’re finally getting a taste of it on US soil.

The Runz FS1 offers a factory look, fit, and finish and is compatible in Volkswagen models like the CC, (Mk5/Mk6) GTI, Jetta, (B6) Passat, and Tiguan.  Installation is simple with a truly “plug and play” wiring harness that eliminates the need to do any coding.  It’s completely integrated with the steering wheel buttons, A/C controls, and Optical Parking System (OPS – parking sensors).  A high resolution 800×480 screen produces crisp video playback and real 3D navigation, though the navigation is currently not yet supported here in the US. However, we hear they are wrapping up US map porting soon.  Meanwhile, we’ve simply used the Bluetooth connection with our iPhone and can get around just fine with Google Maps point-by-point directions guiding us through the speakers in the background, all while streaming our favorite hits with apps like Pandora, Spotify, or our stored library. viewer In addition to the CD/DVD and SD card slot, a “junction box” installed in the glove box allows for direct connection with an iPhone for video and YouTube playback, and photo slideshow display but we leave an iPod in there which stores our personal music collection.  Two USB ports allow for a direct connection of a thumb drive or hard drive so there’s no need to transfer gigs of information like you would need to with VW’s RNS-510.  The user interface is also very easy to manage and responsive. Check out the chart to the right for a more comprehensive spec sheet.

We are looking forward to testing the now available iPhone mirroring feature (available also for Android) as well as the new US map data that will enable navigation. Meanwhile we’ll try and get better, detailed images of the HU and its features as we further test its capabilities. We’ll also tell you about the backup camera we’ve most recently added and plugged into the HU in another feature coming up soon. Stay tuned!

PTC2013 Wrap-Up

0132

400+ European cars with a few Asian imports mixed in and just under $4300 collected to benefit Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. In it’s 9th year running the 2013 Port Townsend Cruise was again a success despite showers in the forecast threatening to put a damper on the event. The rain held back just as participants began to fill the Pacific Raceways parking lot. By the time everyone was on the road the weather began to cooperate a little better with the exception of a few sprinkles here and there. Certainly not enough to deter this crowd from completing the cruise! Each year the City of Port Townsend embraces the arrival of cruise participants and went as far as sending coupon books to Achtuning to have distributed prior to the cruise, a welcomed surprise! Check out the few images we were able to get of the event below or click here to see the entire gallery.

Rob’s VW GTI VR6T

0076About a year and a half ago we ran into Rob, aka vwamigo, and his VW (Mk3) GTI VR6T and promised to eventually wrap up a feature here on Spina². Life just seemed to constantly get in the way of bringing us all back together to accomplish that but when the stars were perfectly aligned we sprinted to action and were finally reunited once again! The GTI wears a different set of rollers since we saw it last and that just confirms it is in a constant state of evolution, much like many of our automotive projects.

We asked Rob to tell us how it all started. “I bought the car brand new from Larson VW in Tacoma in April of 1998,” he began. “I traded in my lightly modded 1993 Ford Probe GT. I didn’t start modding the GTI until I had it for about three years, except wheels and tires.” Two months into ownership Rob picked up his first set of aftermarket wheels, a set of 17-inch TSW VX1 wheels wrapped with Yokohama rubber. A moderate modding budget on top of a new car payment kept progress at a light pace. “About three years later, I discovered a tuner shop on Lake City Way called A-Tech. They mostly catered to the JDM crowd but the owner, Tommy Hwang, wanted to bring in more customers with Euros. He started me off with a giant stainless steel, dual-dtm tipped ‘universal fit’ muffler. Then I got talked into a set of springs that sat on adjustable collars over the stock shocks.” These would later be replaced with a set of Autotech Sport Tuning sourced H&R Race Springs over Bilstein Sport struts when the stock shocks inevitably failed. “Eventually I found Momentum Motor Parts in British Columbia while paging through an old VW tuner magazine,” Rob continues. “I ordered a set of non-smoked Hella dual round headlights and M3 tail lights.”

“At this time I worked nights delivering newspapers to UW. I met, somewhat accidentally, a young VW guy named Jason Wine. He told me about VWVortex.com and my life as I once knew it changed forever.” Like many, the forum had introduced Rob to other like-minded individuals who helped motivate him to get the GTI where it is today. “I discovered Evolution Sports in Everett and it’s eccentric owner, Matt Johnson. I purchased several items there, the first was a full stainless Techtonics Tuning exhaust with Borla muffler. Matt wasn’t doing installs at the time so he directed me, through vortex, to a couple of uber scruffy roughnecks – Chris DeLong and a very young and somewhat innocent Rob Eiffert. These two malcontents were working at Specialty Motors in North Seattle at the time and they got my TT exhaust put on just in time for my first show, Waterwagens 2004.”

“Chris soon went on to open his own shop, Fine Tuning, and Eiffert soon followed.” Rob’s friendship with the duo grew from there. “Chris’ policy of ‘not bringing ground beef to McDonald’s and asking them to cook it’ was engraved in my skull so everything from then on, for the most part, was subsequently ordered and installed by Chris and his staff.” Otherwise he’d get Eiffert’s help with weekend garage projects. The on-going list of parts now include Bilstein PSS9 coil-overs, OZ Superleggera wheels, a Peloquin limited-slip differential installed in a rebuilt transmission with cryo-treated gears, Audi TT 12.3″ brakes, and a Kinetic Stage 1 turbo kit. The interior is adorned with MOMO accessories and he has kept himself and his passengers comfortable and in style with Corbeau CR-1 seats.

That catches us up with Rob’s on-going journey with his VW (Mk3) GTI VR6T. It’s not his first German car but it certainly got him hooked as he and his family now own 4 Volkswagens! We’ll be sure to catch up with Rob some time again and see how things are progressing.

CC v.2013

3163 Changing things up for the 2013 season with our Volkswagen CC, we’re now running 19″ Hartmann Euromesh 3 wheels from Achtuning. It’s a small bump down in size from the previous 20″ rollers and will subsequently offer a smoother ride. The H&R “ultra-low” coilover suspension was wound down even further to maintain tire tuck while wheel spacers were bumped up 6mm on the front axles. We’re still toying around with fitment and may add some negative camber out back and push the wheels out a bit more for an even tighter fit. Check back!

2013 Port Townsend Cruise

Here we go again! The 9th annual Port Townsend Cruise kicks off this Saturday, this time benefiting a new cause – Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. And once again European car tuner Achtuning steps up to host and cover costs to rent space at Pacific Raceways for the start of the cruise as well as reserve parking spaces in the City of Port Townsend for the 500+ expected participants. Despite forecasts of rain (again) we look forward to a successful event and hope to get an event “wrap-up” of sorts done similar to last year. Stay tuned!
